Namdroling Tibetan Monastery is located a few kilometers away from Kushalnagar. It is the second largest Tibetan settlement in India.

It seems monks have secluded themselves completely from the public area. The only monastery residents who interact with people are the shoe keepers, although I saw many monks praying within closed doors.

Before going in to the temple, you need to take off your shoes. There is a small counter where two people were giving large, numbered plastic bowls in which to put your shoes. They were charging Rs 1 for each pair. While collecting our shoes at the end, I did not have exact change. I told the man that I only had Rs. 2 instead of Rs. 4. He happily said, "No problem, sir". I was glad to see that it was not a money making racket.

The temple has a hall with three large statues of Guru Rinpoche, Lord Buddha and Buddha Amitayus. They were beautifully decorated with bright colors and ornaments.

I have never been to monastery before but with so many noisy visitors, it was not the kind of place where you would go to find peace. I think this is the reason I did not see many monks in public area.
